Department of Material Physics

Last lecture

On Tuesday, 7th of July 2026, our head Prof. Goldhahn delivered his final lecture, marking the end of an outstanding era. To celebrate this special milestone, the entire group surprised him near the end of the class, setting off indoor golden rain fireworks in the lecture hall to the resounding applause of his students. On behalf of the countless successful students he has guided, we would like to sincerely thank Prof. Goldhahn for his many years of exceptional lectures and dedication.

Golden rain fireworks interrupt "27.2. Optical imaging".

Paul Drude Medal

Our PhD student Jona Grümbel was awarded the prestigious Paul Drude Medal at the 13th Workshop on Spectroscopic Ellipsometry in Genoa in February 2026 for his contribution:
Anharmonic phonon broadening in high symmetry crystals: rocksalt MgO and ScN, and wurtzite AlN
The Paul Drude Medal is awarded by the Working Group on Ellipsometry (AKE) to exceptional young scientists (students, PhD candidates, or early postdocs) for outstanding contributions to ellipsometric metrology. We congratulate Jona to this great success! This marks the second Paul Drude Medal for our group, distinguishing us as the only research team globally to receive this honor twice mirroring the excellent scientific mentorship provided in the Department of Material Physics!
